A meme

A meme, gakked from [livejournal.com profile] jocelyncs even though I wasn't tagged, cos I thought it looked kinda fun:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag three people:  [livejournal.com profile] fritzi17, [livejournal.com profile] born_to_try, [livejournal.com profile] bexwivspex

I read this a couple of weeks ago, so it was on top of everything else on my shelf.

"In what way different?"
The policeman moistened his lips again, and sucked the air between his teeth.
"Made differently," he said at last.

It's from Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines, in case you were wondering :)

"In particular, the poet should scrutinize every word to make sure it is the best word in its particualr place, for it is very easy in the heat of writing to put down an approximation of what one means in order to get on with the poem. Such hasty choices should be reconsidered, and the precise word substituted for them.

"Care must be taken, however, not to spoil the spontaneity - or impression of sponteneity - of the original version of the poem in rewriting it."
